Dongnae seems to be a sino-korean word: Dong means east, and nae means hmm.. Actually, I'm not sure what nae means :D. Maybe the second character was meant to be read phonetically.

Anyhow, during the Chosun dynasty, Busan city was centered around Dongnae and was in fact called 'dongnae city'. Busan was just the name of the area where some Japanese merchants were allowed by the King of Korea to reside (nearby current-day Busan station). When Japan annexed Korea in 1910, the center of the city changed from Dongnae to Busan, and the name of the city was changed because of this. Ironically, the center of the city is now Seomyeon, close to Dongnae, but I don't think there's a plan to change the city's name again.

Oncheon Stream Neighborhood by Parent. Here find some pictures I took of the Oncheoncheong (Oncheon stream) in April 2009 during the spring festival. Note that On means hot, cheon means spring, and cheong means stream. It is named this way since the stream flows by a.. Distance from Dongnae: 1.7km SE, 29 pictures.
