Anyhow, during the Chosun dynasty, Busan city was centered around Dongnae and was in fact called 'dongnae city'. Busan was just the name of the area where some Japanese merchants were allowed by the King of Korea to reside (nearby current-day Busan station). When Japan annexed Korea in 1910, the center of the city changed from Dongnae to Busan, and the name of the city was changed because of this. Ironically, the center of the city is now Seomyeon, close to Dongnae, but I don't think there's a plan to change the city's name again.
