McGill University is a major public, medical-doctoral, research-intensive university located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. One of the oldest universities in Canada, McGill was founded in 1821 from a bequest by James McGill, a prominent Montreal merchant, who left an endowment in addition to the property on which the university now stands. Chartered during the British colonial era 46 years before Canadian Confederation, McGill would become the first non-denominational university in the British Empire.
