This was built by the Japanese just after the Japan-Qing war to supposedly 'free' Korea from Manchu Qing. The irony is that the Manchu conquerors were people of Korean origin ([[Silla]] and [[Balhae]] stock). The 'independence gate' marks the end of the tributary relationship between Korea and the Manchus, and the effective start of the Japanese occupation of Korea.
