A [[danchi]] is an apartment complex built in areas with heavy housing demands, often in newly developed neighborhoods or the suburbs. Some of the danchis are for the middle class, others for the more wealthy. It's possible to tell the quality of the apartment just from the outside, as the more luxurious blocks do not allow the occupants to dry their clothes on the balcony.
