During the 60s or 70s, the Ueno station area used to have somewhat of a bad reputation due to the people living there being generally unsophisticated blue-collars. The Ueno residents most often came from the northern prefectures (Aomori, Tohoku, or Niigata) which used to be farming-fishing-oriented with little opportunity for the youth. Lots then left for Tokyo setting camp at the closest station from their hometown, i.e. Ueno.

While some blue-collar remnants are still present, Ueno has nonetheless changed much for the better in recent years with several shopping arcades and department stores serving the younger generation.
